Succession sowing in June for the best harvests

Please excuse the radio silence for the past month, we have been beyond stretched with staff absences due to sickness and annual leave, and at a very busy time of year for us.

I don't know about where you are but we had a wet May here in Devon, which is unusual compared to the last few years.

If you've had lots of rain too, the you are probably experiencing the same as us. Our crops are growing away nicely but the weeds are too and its been tricky to weed properly with the wet soil.

Here are our team de-leafing this year's lettuce seed crops to improve airflow around the base of the plants

Succession sowing

Succession sowing is doing multiple sowing of crops throughout the season (usually every 2-4 weeks) to ensure a constant supply of produce which is always at the highest quality.

Many fast-growing crops go past their best if left in the ground too long, so it's better to space out your sowings rather than sowing your entire crop in one go.

Succession sowing is also a great way to fill in empty spaces which will appear in your beds once you (or the local wildlife!) start harvesting your crops.

N.B. it is not wise to sow Asian greens (e.g. pak choy) until after the summer solstice (21 June), as they are day-length sensitive and will likely bolt fast if sown before then.

On Wednesday it was the spring equinox, which means that now the days are officially longer the nights. This feels like cause for celebration!
