September sowing quickie

Published over 1 year ago • 1 min read

Just a very quick note this week as we are having our office refurbed and it's total chaos at VS HQ! We'll give you a virtual tour when we are back in.

Seeds to sow in September

There are quite a few things that be sown in September and will thrive in the cool damp autumn weather. Mainly leafy veg as they tend to need less heat and light energy.

Hardy annual flowers can be also be sown from September, we have quite a few new varieties (and some old favourites) which we are trying to get processed and germination-tested before October so you can get them sown this year.

Some veg sown now will produce food over the winter while others will come in to their own when the weather warms in spring and you'll get a fantastic early crop.

How much extra warmth, if any, you are able to provide your winter crops will determine at what point they are ready for harvest. A polytunnel or glass house is ideal but even a bit of horticultural fleece or a cloche can make a huge difference in protecting your plants from the worst of the elements.

On Wednesday it was the spring equinox, which means that now the days are officially longer the nights. This feels like cause for celebration! The second half of March is when we sow most of our annual flower seeds, so we are going full power on this right now. It's also the time to sow many other seeds - to see the full list click the button...
