Our new crop growing guides and early sowing tips for 2022

Happy New Year!

We hope that you had some time to rest over the festive period.

Did you know there is an old saying that you should not sow any seeds six weeks either side of Christmas?

We think this is a pretty solid rule to this day although it is possible to push things a bit now we have things like polytunnels and heat mats.

There is really not much to gain from sowing seeds very early in the year as there is so little heat and light energy for them to grow big and strong - and once the days start to warm later sowings of things easily catch up with earlier ones.

We highly recommend not getting F.O.M.O. and copying what you see others doing on social media (tempting as it might be) without doing your own research first!

That being said there are some crops which do benefit from sowing early as they are slow growing and need a long season, and others that if sown early can get you a nice early crop e.g. some salad leaves.

Click the button below to the see what seeds you can sow in January.

N.B:

  • Tomatoes, chillies, peppers and aubergines will need additional heat (and maybe light) if sown very early. We use a heat mat and LED lights which are widely available
  • Onions will need heat to germinate but once germinated will be happy in an unheated space like a cold frame or polytunnel

You can also use our monthly seed sowing pages to help you plan the next few months.

On Wednesday it was the spring equinox, which means that now the days are officially longer the nights. This feels like cause for celebration! (despite the fact that here in Devon it has not stopped raining for what feels like months, and we cannot get on our land to plant our seedlings). The second half of March is when we sow most of our annual flower seeds, so we are going full power on this right now. It's also the time to sow many other seeds - to see the full list click the button...
