Fantastic new growing guides available and January sowing tips :)

Published 4 months ago • 1 min read

Happy 2024, we hope that it will be a great year for you!

We are pretending that we can feel the days getting longer now but realistically it will be a few weeks before it's really noticeable.

At least we're heading in the right direction...

New crop growing guides now available online

We are really pleased to announce that we have created masses of new growing guides to help you grow top notch produce and flowers in your garden.

This was happening in the background throughout last year and was a huge piece of work.

Massive thanks to our team member Caroline for doing the bulk of the work on this :)

We have now made 40 guides and we intend to make one for each of the crops that we sell.

They are all available as downloadable PDFs too, please feel free to share them with others.

You can find them by clicking below:

Conditions for sowing seeds in January

There is a general rule to not sow any seeds 6 weeks either side of Christmas, as there is just not much energy from the sun available in terms of both light and heat and seeds and seedlings can struggle to get going.

There are some seeds that can be sown in January but there are caveats to this - see below:

Unheated in module trays or pots under cover from mid-Jan:

With heat for germination and then unheated undercover:

With continuous heat and light - ADVANCED! Plants will get very weak and leggy without the right amount of heat and light:

Direct:

  • Poppies - some people sprinkle poppy seeds onto fallen snow in the winter - I find this particularly romantic

All the best

On Wednesday it was the spring equinox, which means that now the days are officially longer the nights. This feels like cause for celebration! (despite the fact that here in Devon it has not stopped raining for what feels like months, and we cannot get on our land to plant our seedlings). The second half of March is when we sow most of our annual flower seeds, so we are going full power on this right now. It's also the time to sow many other seeds - to see the full list click the button...
