We hope you are not finding the January weather too bleak.

As mentioned our last bulletin, there are not loads of seeds which can be sown in January, and the ones that can might need special conditions.

I won't repeat the information here but you can check out the seeds which can be sown and what needs they have by clicking the button below.

Gardening and growing resources

We are receiving a lot of emails asking for advice on growing and where to source various products and materials so we thought we'd compile a list which we could share with you here.

Sourcing materials

  • Organic seed and potting compost - we use Klassmans peat free 'Tray' for our seed sowing and 'Potting' for potting on. We have also used Moorland Gold in the past with good success - this uses peat dredged from the bottom of rivers so is considered to be more sustainable
  • Green manure seeds - We recommend Cotswold Seeds (they offer both organic and conventional seeds), or Tamar Organics
  • Liquid fertiliser - We use Natural Grower Organic Liquid Fertiliser to feed some of our plants than spend a long time in their trays before planting out
  • Perennial vegetable seeds and plants - Our fellow Baddaford collective member Mandy at Incredible Vegetables specialises in perennial veg

Growing information and resources

  • Crop guides - for detailed crop growing guides you can find ours here
  • Making compost - We recommend picking up a copy of Devon composting hero, Nicky Scott's, book How to Make and Use Compost
  • Using woodchip - Ben Raskin of the Soil Association (and fellow seed enthusiast) has written a great book called The Woodchip Handbook packed full of useful info about using woodchip in the garden
  • General gardening advice - Both Huw Richards and Charles Dowding have excellent YouTube channels and have written many good books
  • Cut flower advice - we recommend following Zoe Woodward on Instagram. She runs a "grow-along" each season where you can follow her lead and grow yourself a beautiful cutting garden

Lastly but not leastly, for the sourcing of all your great organic veg, herb and flower seeds - we recommend Vital Seeds(!).

On Wednesday it was the spring equinox, which means that now the days are officially longer the nights. This feels like cause for celebration! (despite the fact that here in Devon it has not stopped raining for what feels like months, and we cannot get on our land to plant our seedlings). The second half of March is when we sow most of our annual flower seeds, so we are going full power on this right now. It's also the time to sow many other seeds - to see the full list click the button...
