❄️ December in the garden + Christmas gift ideas 💝

Published 5 months ago • 1 min read

We hope that you've been enjoying some crisp winter mornings where you are - we've had some here in Devon and it's been a very welcome change from the warm and wet weather we've had until now.

Your garden will be going into winter dormancy and there won't be much happening now, although I'm always amazed by the power and resilience of calendula which seems to still be in full flower in some areas :)

It's a good time to finish clearing beds, but you might want to leave some dead plants as habitat for over-wintering insects. Sunflower stalks are a particularly good home for bugs.

As a general rule, what looks like untidiness to the human eye is great habitat for the rest of nature. It's all about finding the balance, as with all things in life.

Now is a great time to start planning your garden for next year - while you still have this last summer fresh in your mind - to inform you of what worked well, what didn't work so well, and what you have learned for next time.

You could look through your seed box and see what you might want to grow next year. Click below to visit our seed shop.

Christmas Gifts

Our great Christmas gifts are flying off the shelves and it's wonderful to think of all the happy gardeners opening seed collections and wall calendars on Christmas Day :).

We're really pleased to have expanded the range of collections we're offering as the new ones have been very popular.

Our Something Different collection even made it into the Sunday Times list of recommended gifts for gardeners!

Just to remind you what we are offering this year:

  • Seed Collections - Nine collections available, either with eight or four packets inside. There's something for all tastes from the quirky "Something Different", to the practical "Cottage Garden", the "Hot Stuff" collection for the chilli-obsessed and the "Cutting Garden" for those for whom beauty and colour is the bringer of most joy, and many more.
  • Growing Through the Seasons 2024 Wall Calendar - A celebration of seasonal vegetables, fruit and flowers illustrated with full page original hand carved linocut prints. This calendar is a perfect gift for gardeners, allotment growers, vegetable lovers.
  • Seed Gift Voucher - Not much explanation needed here - it does what it says on the tin! A great option if you'd like to gift seeds but would like the receiver to be able to choose their own :)
  • Online Seed Saving Course - We are offering our popular seed-saving course at 25% off during November and December. A great gift for those wanting to upskill and dive deeper into the world of plants. It is available in the form of a gift card.

That's all for now!

All the best

Fred, Ronja, and the rest of the team

On Wednesday it was the spring equinox, which means that now the days are officially longer the nights. This feels like cause for celebration! (despite the fact that here in Devon it has not stopped raining for what feels like months, and we cannot get on our land to plant our seedlings). The second half of March is when we sow most of our annual flower seeds, so we are going full power on this right now. It's also the time to sow many other seeds - to see the full list click the button...
