Beltane virtual site tour of Vital Seeds growing space :)

Published almost 2 years ago • 1 min read

On Sunday it's May 1, Beltane, the official start of summer. It is traditionally a festival of fertility, the Earth has awakened from its winter slumber and is bursting with potent energy.

It is a heady rush for life to grow and reproduce while the warmth from the sun is with us. The trees are in leaf (mostly) many plants are flowering, the weeds are growing like mad!

We thought it would be nice to take you on a virtual site tour so you can see what we and our plants are up to at the moment. If it's popular we may do this every 6 weeks with the cross quarter points. The next one would be on the summer solstice.

Seeds to sow in May

While it might be too late now for things like tomatoes and peppers, there's still lots of things that can be sown in May.

It's a good time to direct sow tender crops like beans, sweetcorn and squashes but do wait until the risk of frost has passed and cover with fleece if cold nights are expected.

May is a good time to do a second sowing of lettuce. Brassicas like kale and purple sprouting broccoli do very well from a May sowing.

On Wednesday it was the spring equinox, which means that now the days are officially longer the nights. This feels like cause for celebration! (despite the fact that here in Devon it has not stopped raining for what feels like months, and we cannot get on our land to plant our seedlings). The second half of March is when we sow most of our annual flower seeds, so we are going full power on this right now. It's also the time to sow many other seeds - to see the full list click the button...
